Cheryl Henderson
Co-founder,  Jacksonville, OR

Cheryl.JPGCheryl has championed barefoot hoof care and barefoot practitioners for many years, starting with free-to-the-public "hoof fests." and continuing with clinics featuring Martha Olivo, Gene Ovenick, and Pete Ramey. Concerned that barefoot hoofcare practitioners would soon be required to be "certificated," Cheryl partnered with Laura Vaughan to found the Oregon School of Natural Hoof Care. Cheryl is a careful observer of the hoof and has discovered many new aspects of its structures and function.

Laura Vaughan
Co-founder, Jacksoncille, OR

Laura.jpgLaura came to hoof care led by her filly Natan, who contracted Potomic fever in 2001. Until she met Cheryl Henderson, she was unable to find help to deal with the severe hoof issues which resulted from the initial illness and the laminitis that followed. Together, the two women learned what they needed to know to help the horse, who was eventually able to walk. They envisioned a school where they could share the knowledge they gained from treating Natan and where they could continue their studies. The School of Natural Hoof Care is the embodiment of that vision.

Nancy Ash
Certified Hoof Groom, College Instructor
Susanville, CA

Locusttree.jpgNancy Ash: retired English teacher, began her training first as a farrier in the Lassen Community College Horsemanship program and graduated to barefoot trimming under the tutelage of Martha Olivo, Nancy calls herself an “amateur trimmer,” using the word amateur in its purest sense to mean “someone who does something for pleasure rather than for pay.”  Nancy takes on only those clients who are willing to learn to take care of their own horses’ feet. “I don’t have to trim for a living, but I do want to share all I’ve learned. In my opinion, caring equine owners know their animals from top to bottom. If you don’t know their hooves, you don’t know enough.”

Dave Fitton

Hoof Care Speciallist,
Stratmore, CA

DaveFitton.jpgMy horse Booger Red led me on my barefoot odyssey.  At the age of eighteen, Red was diagnosed with navicular syndrome.  He had been well cared for his entire life with traditional regular shoeing.  Three farriers and two veterinarians later, I began searching the Internet for answers.  I was determined to allow my horse to heal, not just manage his pain.  I had the great fortune to attend two workshops with Martha Olivio and met James Welz, both of whom had just returned from Germany after completing their studies  with Dr. Hiltrud Strasser.  The knowledge they shared with me convinced me I was on the right path to heal my horse.  I, too, was certified by Dr. Hiltrud Strasser after completing a year-long technical and practical course of study. I continue to network and study with barefoot advocates like Pete Ramey, Dr. Robert Bowker, and my colleagues at the Oregon School of Natural Hoof Care.  As a professional I believe it is my responsibility to continue to study, network, and learn for the sake of our equine clients.
